Local Videos // Lubbock

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Here is some local flavor for you from where I (still) call home: Lubbock, Texas. Growing up dead center of quite literally the middle of nowhere meant that we very seldom had any touring bands make a pit-stop in our college town. A plus to this otherwise negative isolation proved to be that local acts thrived. In fact, I would say that out of all of the places I’ve lived, Lubbock has had some of the most eclectic and better sounding local bands that I have heard. Not surprising, alt-country proved to house the best-of-the-best of bands, that being Thrift Store Cowboys. Although the group has toured extensively and recorded incredibly polished and delightful albums, they still have remained local at heart.

When I first started going to their shows about ten years ago, the core of the group consisted of singer/guitarist Daniel Fluitt and singer/fiddler Amanda Shires. Both are hyper-talented and incredibly hard-working and are deserving of higher acclaim. Below are two videos highlighting them individually (Amanda has since moved on and started recording solo albums, although her ties to Lubbock can still be seen in the video). Enjoy the best of West Texas!

Memoryhouse // A lot of Videos

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

<3 you Memoryhouse. 2k11 has been so absent without your wistful melodies and melodramatic whispers. Can’t wait for Sub Pop to wake up from the dream state you put them in with your music so that they can release your LP. Hope it happens soon… Until then, I will be watching these videos all day, every day:

Reading Rainbow // Live Videos

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Reading Rainbow just posted on their blog a series of live videos from a recent gig in Pittsburgh featuring a 3-piece version of their group. Below are my favorites — stellar stuff!

Videos for the Veekend // 6|4 – 6|6

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Haven’t put together one of these round-ups in a while, so let’s ease back into things with this mini-collection of my favorite video finds of the past week or so.

I’ve long been a fan of the sweet a cappella tunes of the Vermont trio Mountain Man, and this video, recorded by Vincent Galgano in NYC, just reaffirms my love for the group:

Jimmy over at the great tumblr blog Head Underwater recently unearthed this killer video for Marissa Nadler’s “Thinking Of You” from two years ago. Amazing!

Speaking of amazing music vids, check this one for His Clancyness’s latest single “Summer Majestic”, as first premiered on Delicious Scopitone:

I always love the ingenuity of creative music listeners and the stuff they’re able to come up with. Take this weather channel heavy fan vid for Ariel Pink’s track “Reminiscences” for example:

Another cool archival video snipped together, this time for Baths’ track “Maximalist” [via: yvynyl]

Lastly, here is a great stripped-down version of the Norwegian electro-pop group Casiokids performing in Austria, recorded by the folks over at They Shoot Music:

Videos for the Veekend // 5|14 – 5|16

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Got a mega-edition of this week’s video round-up, so let’s just jump right in:

The first video is the official cut for the Swedish percussion duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums track “Bleed Like There Was No Other Flood” (via It’s A Trap). The beautiful visual projections match perfectly with the mysterious, if not all out dark, tone of the chorally-dense song:

Switching gears a bit, this mash-up between Weezy F. Baby and The Office is unbelievable (courtesy of Get Off the Coast). Once you get past the initial shock of hearing the two paired together, you find that the two actually work pretty damn well together:

Although I’ve been a bit mum about them on the blog, I’ve been spinning the blissful lo-fi pop songs of Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils a lot lately. Here’s a stellar video put together by Wooden Lens for their track “Window View” (via Delicious Scopitone):

Behind Sincerely Yours, I would say that Labrador Records is my second favorite Swedish label. They somehow have a knack for finding and signing bands that pump out a great variety of pop songs. The latest music video from one of their artists is this treat by the Mary Onettes entitled “The Night Before the Funeral”:

Nice to see the behemoths over at Pitchfork give some love to PT-Music favorites Memoryhouse. Here is their official music video for their beautiful bedroom pop song “Lately (Deuxieme)” as premiered on p4k’s .tv spin-off:

David Greenwald posted this amazing video on his Rawkblog of Dan Bejar (of Destroyer, New Pornos, Swan Lake fame) acoustically performing “The Freedom”. Take a listen:

In case you’ve been living in a cave, here is the official video for The National’s “Bloodbuzz Ohio” (via IGIF). Great stuff as usual…

To wrap-up this mega listing of videos, here is a brand spanking new track by Philly uncategorizable band Man Man as posted by Matt over at You Ain’t No Picasso. Soooo excited for this record to be released!

NPR // Abaji + Edmar Castaneda

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

NPR really has been impressing me with some of their out of left-field picks for their critically acclaimed Tiny Desk Concert series, particularly that of French/Lebanese multi-instrumentalist Abaji and Columbian jazz harpist Edmar Castaneda.

I couldn’t find an embeddable video of Abaji’s performance at music guru Bob Boilen’s desk (for that, you’ll have to go directly to the source — and trust me, you’ll want to do it), however, here is him performing “Desert to Desert” off his most recent LP entitled Origine Orients. This really is mind-blowing stuff.

As for Edmar Castaneda, check out his amazing fifteen-minute performance showcasing his killer harp skills that would even leave Joanna Newsom’s mouth agape:

I couldn’t find any freely downloadable mp3s of either one, but thankfully there is a wealth of videos uploaded on youtube displaying their amazing talent, so check them out!

Videos for the Veekend // 4|30 – 5|2

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Got a great collection of video finds from the past week, so let’s jump right into it:

Georgia down at Microphone Memory Emotion re-posted this video of Mountain Man singing “Animal Tracks” sometime during their lengthy stay at SXSW this past March. I swear, I’ll never get tired of this song…

The next video is of Neon Indian performing “Should Have Taken Acid With You” (arguably my favorite song by Mr. Palamo) from a show back in March recorded by Extraneous Noise:

I have to admit, the Electrical Engineer in me squealed a little with delight when I caught Born Ruffian’s latest oscilloscope-tastic music video for their track “What to Say”:

The second week in a row Toro y Moi has made my weekend round-up, this time with a live performance of his track “You Hid” shot by videographer Jon Casey:

Interstellar, space-y, or “lunar limelight” as Chocolate Bobka called it, are all apt adjectives to describe this live video of Oneohtrix Point Never’s performance of “Star Looks”:

The next video find is courtesy of Lou down at Salad Fork for unearthing this great Beach House cover by chanteuse Emily Reo:

The final video by Philly band U.S. Girls must have had a budget of $20 because it was made entirely on a B&W photocopier. The result is absolutely amazing:

Allah Las // “Don’t Want to Hear No More”

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

As usual, got scooped by my friend Emmanuel down at Delicious Scopitone on this new video from PT-Music favorites the Allah Las. If you like their 60s infused psych-rock, you can download more tracks from them at their muxtape page.

Get Off the Coast // Music Videos

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Jheri Evans, from the awesome music site Get Off the Coast, has recently added collage creator and music video producer extraordinaire to his ever-growing e-repertoire. An artistic jack-of-all-trades, Evans is starting to get a lot of notice for his works, so I thought I would feature two of my favorite videos that he’s constructed from old archived video.

The first is from PT-Music favorite Gobble Gobble for their track “Wrinklecarver” off an upcoming late-April release called Eskimo Taco. With intricate dancing that I haven’t seen since the lone Quinceañera I attended back in junior high, the film looks a bit like a Mexican adaptation of a Bollywood video — fitting the hyper-active music of Gobble Gobble perfectly!

The second video is for L.A.’s Pat Grossi, who goes by the name Active Child. Grossi’s track “Wilderness” has, without a doubt, generated quite the buzz on the web as of late (I first heard him through NPR), and Jheri’s video certainly adds fuel to the fire. Taking the literal interpretation of the track title, the video is composed of snippets of old footage from the Grand Canyon that match well with Grossi’s ethereal vocals.

So check out all of Jheri’s videos from his vimeo page here and also be sure to head over to his blog to find your new favorite “undiscovered” band.
