jj // “Let Go” Video

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

My anticipation for this jj video was palpable, as earlier this week their Swedish label Sincerely Yours rerouted their site to a short not-safe-for-epileptics “video” (click through) showcasing crossed Euro signs, some Renaissance art, and, of course, flashing lights. Even by Sincerely Yours’ standards, this was a bizarre move — making you guess that something big was on the horizon.

And boy did this video deliver! It’s like a Swedish indie-pop version of Snoop Dogg & Pharrell Williams’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot”, full of Black Labradors, marijuana, and the occasional bling. Somehow, this is exactly what I’d imagine a video featuring Joakim and Elin would be…

jj // Rarity Tracks

No doubt my love affair with the mysterious Swedish act jj is borderline obsessive. Even though the duo of Joakim Benon and vocalist Elin Kastlander seem to put out free mp3s every other week through their equally cryptic label Sincerely Yours, it never satiates my appetite for their music. Below is a collection of oddball tracks that they’ve done which have cropped up online. Some miss the mark (“Troublemaker” for example) while others I can’t believe were left off of their proper releases — but all make for pretty good listens. Enjoy!

jj // My Way | Let Go

Friday, January 15th, 2010

The cryptic Swedish label Sincerely Yours seems to be in a giving mood lately, offering up first a video featuring a jj-assisted Avner single called “Bed för mig”, then releasing jj’s n° 2.1 which features a handful of previously unreleased tracks, now they just made available two new tracks for free download that jj made on his trip in ’08 to Malaga: “My Way” and “Let Go”.

Both are great tracks that certainly don’t feel like they should have been left on the cutting floor from the n° 2 sessions (UPDATE: “Let Go” is off their upcoming Secretly Canadian n° 3 release). “My Way” features a lengthy Lil’ Wayne interlude (courtesy of his verse off of Trina’s “Don’t Trip”) over jj’s vaporized atmospheric instrumentals. “Let Go”, on the other hand, uses no heavy-duty sampling as a crutch — serving up heavenly harp plucks to compliment their always airy vocals. Like anything jj does, there are overt drug references (“take me away like I overdosed on heroin”), however most of the track’s subject matter deals more with the need to take chances.

If you want to see the whole post, check it from Sincerely Your’s site here, or if you just want to download the tracks:
