<p>Today I did a search in my music library for Phoenix&#8217;s hit song &#8220;1901&#8243; and noticed that there were a ton of tracks that had a year from the 1900s referenced in the title. Even more surprising is how good a lot of these songs are! Here&#8217;s some of my favorites in chronological order:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/01 1901.mp3">Phoenix // 1901 (Live &#038; Unplugged)</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/13 1913 Massacre.mp3">Woody Guthrie // 1913 Massacre</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/08 Petersburg, Liberty Theater, 1914.mp3">Swan Lake // Petersburg, Liberty Theater, 1914</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/03 1928.mp3">Califone // 1928</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/05 1941.mp3">Harry Nilsson // 1941</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/06 Holland, 1945.mp3">Neutral Milk Hotel // Holland, 1945</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/03 1974.mp3">Ryan Adams // 1974</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/16 Chino Love Song 1979.mp3">The Mountain Goats // Chino Love Song 1979</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/05 1979.mp3">Lucero // 1979</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/1-09 1979.mp3">Smashing Pumpkins // 1979</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/08 1981.mp3">The Tough Alliance // 1981</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/12 Sept 15, 1983.mp3">The Mountain Goats // Sept 15, 1983</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/10 From a Pirate Radio Sermon, 1989.mp3">M. Ward // From a Pirate Radio Sermon, 1989</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/09 1991.mp3">Crystal Castles // 1991</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/1997.mp3">Department of Eagles // 1997 (Daytrotter Session)</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/13 1999.mp3">Suburban Kids with Biblical Names // 1999</a></p>
<p>A brief search for past centuries yielded paltry results in comparison (just a Slagsmalsklubben &#8220;1888 Franklin&#8221; song and a handful of year 2000 references). What&#8217;s also interesting is a lot of the 1900s referenced tracks were made in the aughts, highlighting how nostalgia was certainly in vogue the first decade of the 20th century. Anyways, just thought this was something pretty cool to find!</p>

<p>I began using last.fm back late in my undergraduate years around the time I started to get &#8220;serious&#8221; about music, so it&#8217;s interesting to see some of the remnants of my Top-40 radio listening years &#8212; some of which I haven&#8217;t listened to in ages &#8212; creep into the Top Artists list. Obviously the embarrassing entries are there (*cough cough* #44 *cough cough*), but even more telling is how low some of my all-time favorite acts rank. Although <a href="http://www.sunsetrubdown.net/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.sunsetrubdown.net/?referer=');">Sunset Rubdown</a> is present in the top 5, <a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&#038;friendid=16339226" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile_038_friendid=16339226&amp;referer=');">The Knife</a> comes in at an unthinkably low #26 (considering how many records of theirs I have) and even more surprising is the fact that <a href="http://www.myspace.com/electrelane" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.myspace.com/electrelane?referer=');">Electrelane</a> &#8212; arguably my favorite band of all-time &#8212; is at a near bottom dwelling #55. </p>
<p>As the Top 10 goes, it&#8217;s tough for me to not exude my love affair with <a href="http://www.myspace.com/ryanadams" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.myspace.com/ryanadams?referer=');">Ryan Adams</a> and (early) <a href="http://www.myspace.com/brighteyes" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.myspace.com/brighteyes?referer=');">Bright Eyes</a>. Both artists had a handful of factors contributing to their ridiculous amount of plays: 1) They were both mildly responsible for my shift to listening to &#8220;better&#8221; music, 2) Early on, I had them on constant rotation, and 3) Some of their albums have remarkable staying power. The rest of the top ten list is, in my opinion, pretty straightforward composing of a lot of music-lover favorites from the 1990s and 2000s.</p>
<p>To give you some mp3s, here are a handful of my most played tracks from over the years:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/01 from africa to málaga.mp3">jj // From Africa to Malaga</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/04 Heartbeats.mp3">Jose Gonzalez // Heartbeats</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/01 Flume.mp3">Bon Iver // Flume</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/03 A Milli.mp3">Lil&#8217; Wayne // A Milli</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1001/03 Norway.mp3">Beach House // Norway</a></p>
