Live Concerts // NPR

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

The past two weeks, I’ve been catching up on my podcasts because, like most things in my life, I’ve fallen incredibly behind. I’ve always loved the stuff that NPR All Songs Considered have put out (Tiny Desk Concert, Project Song, and of course their regular podcast), but these sets by The New Pornographers and of Montreal, recorded at the 9:30 Club in D.C., are really top-notch. I mean, the live versions of “Myriad Harbor” and “Past is a Grotesque Animal” alone are worth subscribing to the podcast! I’ve linked to their respected episodes below and also threw in some favorite tracks from both groups:

The New Pornographers // Live at DC: June 23, 2010
of Montreal // Live at DC: September 14, 2010

The New Pornographers // Sing Me Spanish Techno

of Montreal // She’s a Rejector

Part-Time Music // Top 100 Artists via Last.fm

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

One thing that I like to do every now and then is check in on my last.fm profile and look at some of the statistics they’ve accumulated about my music listening habits. One stat I find particularly interesting is seeing how many artists I’ve listened to over 100 times — something that, on average, amounts to about 6 hours of continuous music. Well this time when I checked in it just so happened that an even 100 artists had at least 100 plays, so I thought I would share the results with you guys. The following is the cream of the crop Top 10 with the entire list plus analysis after the jump (included as well are the number of plays):

1. Ryan Adams // 609
2. Bright Eyes // 576
3. Lil’ Wayne // 542
4. The Mountain Goats // 503
5. Sunset Rubdown // 443
6. Wilco // 438
7. Radiohead // 408
8. Stars // 406
9. of Montreal // 368
10. Kanye West // 350

of Montreal // Covers Extravaganza!

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I remember the first time I saw of Montreal in concert the day before the release of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer where they blew me away with not only their music but their stage production. As anyone who has seen them live can attest to, Kevin Barnes & Co. know how to put on a show that’s half art and half w-t-f with homemade props straight up from their time at arts and crafts. Anyways, one of the highlights of their show was the cover of Make Out, Fall Out, Make Up by Love is All.

Why am I telling you all this? Well it seems like of Montreal loves covers A LOT. You Ain’t No Picasso has a collection of covers from the band that seems to increase by the week (83 and counting) — as if remembering how to play all the material from the enormous discography isn’t enough! Anyways, check it out and you’ll probably find some of your favorite songs nicely reworked! Here are some of my favorites:

of Montreal // Make Out, Fall Out, Make Up (Love is All Cover)

of Montreal // Jimmy (M.I.A. Cover)

of Montreal // Ever Fallen in Love (Buzzcocks Cover)

of Montreal // Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang Cover)
