Sail A Whale // The Truest Whale

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Keeping the Sincerely Yours love-affair alive, I was navigating their site after the new jj tracks dropped yesterday and I came across this video of Sweden’s Sail A Whale remixing a seemingly remix-worthy Korallreven track (it looks like “Truest Faith” is the “A-Milli” of 2010).

Stripping the song of most of its airy fun-filled frills, Sail A Whale pretty much only keeps the background rhythm of the original — even replacing the instrumentation of that line from a lightly touched keyboard to a more oriental chime — making you think that it’s a completely new track rather than a reimagination of an established one. Even after listening to it a dozen times, I can’t hear too much of a similarity between the two (case in point: the vocal overlay is brief, occuring two-thirds of the way through the song for a mere thirty seconds). What we get instead of a happy-go-lucky electro-pop track is a more sparsely layered atmospheric song that is a ripe soundtrack for blissful sleep.

You can check out the video, composed by Sebastian Rozenberg, as well as an mp3 of the track (courtesy of GvB) below:

Korallreven // A Dream by Korallreven

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Not one to brag, but I think I am in the top tier of Korallreven fans in the world. Due to my lengthy stint in Scandinavia, I think I will always have an incredibly large soft spot for Scandinavian musicians (see: jj, Jens Lekman, Taken By Trees, Raveonettes, Air France, ceo, etc…). Korallreven seems to be the Swedish import du jour, and this 22 minute mix that they put together is just one of the many reasons why.

The majority of the mix is an assortment of remixes and mash-ups — some of them theirs (SALEM, Taken By Trees), some of them other people’s (Teengirl Fantasy remix of Memoryhouse’s “Lately”, and of course slow-mo Bieber) — with some solid hits interspersed throughout. Love the start, love the mid-section, and the finale is phenomenal. This is a picture perfect blending of sound that is going to get more than the standard single listen for mixes.

Neon Indian & Korallreven // Remixes

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Came across two great mp3s from the past week that are sure to temporarily scratch everyone’s remix itch. The first is a spaced-out minimalist rendition of ‘chillwave’ pioneer Neon Indian’s first single “6669 (I Don’t Know If You Know)” by Portland’s own musician/culinary extraordinaire White Hinterland.

It’s only been two weeks since I last posted about Korallreven (including a remix by Ghostape), but this reworking of “The Truest Faith” by Canadian electronic artist CFCF was too good to pass up. Enjoy!

Korallreven // The Truest Faith

I’ve been sitting on the Swedish group Korallreven for a while and a Ghostape remix of their splendid track “The Truest Faith” was enough to jolt me out of my slumber and finally post about them. Composed of the duo Daniel Tjäder and Marcus Joons (the former is also of Radio Dept. fame), Korallreven is just another drop in the already overflowing cup of blissfully sweet pop music that the Scandinavian country is known for. For the remix, Ghostape does what he does best: loop the song’s harmonious elements and cake over it with sonorous tribal percussion.

You can check out the video for the original track as well as an mp3 for the remix (via: GvB). Also included is the B-side to their recently released Acephale 7” which, from both an aesthetic and sonic perspective, is a must-have record.
