Sincerely Yours // jj + ceo Tracks

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Being on the West Coast, I’ve long understood that I’ll never be able to break any news from the Swedish label Sincerely Yours; however that does not mean I can’t be an über-fan of theirs! The label’s latest news splash that has been reverberating around the blogs this morning is centered around the new “mystery” group of ceo. Not sure if the name is pronounced like the hyper-wealthy C.E.O.s of business or if it is some sort of Italian suffix, but regardless, the group looks to at least include the Eric Berglund-half of The Tough Alliance. This is great news to hear considering that fellow friend and regular badminton opponent Jens Lekman has had no idea what The Tough Alliance has been up to lately. Check out the amazing video ceo put together for their stellar intro-track aptly titled “Prologue”:

And to mark the occasion, fellow labelmates jj have put together a piano ballad that strikes me as one of their best songs to date:

What’s next for the cryptic Sincerely Yours label? Well if gaps in their catalog are any indication, it looks like we’ll have two more treats (YOURS0135 and YOURS0138) in the near future!

jj // “Let Go” Video

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

My anticipation for this jj video was palpable, as earlier this week their Swedish label Sincerely Yours rerouted their site to a short not-safe-for-epileptics “video” (click through) showcasing crossed Euro signs, some Renaissance art, and, of course, flashing lights. Even by Sincerely Yours’ standards, this was a bizarre move — making you guess that something big was on the horizon.

And boy did this video deliver! It’s like a Swedish indie-pop version of Snoop Dogg & Pharrell Williams’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot”, full of Black Labradors, marijuana, and the occasional bling. Somehow, this is exactly what I’d imagine a video featuring Joakim and Elin would be…

jj // Some Questions Answered

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Stumbled across two jj interviews that are both intriguing and hilarious. The first is a Q&A session with the folks at Drumming on Tabletops. Here are some of the highlights:

Where does the name “jj” come from?
jag & joakim
joakim & jag
(“jag” means me or myself in Swedish)

What do you think of the new “indie” culture created by Pitchfork media and how it’s blending with popular American music?
We don’t know what to think about Pitchfork. I don’t think we think about it at all since we first heard our friends telling us about it, that they’d written something about us, and now when you ask us about it. But that someone on the internet would direct the so called “show” seems ridiculous to me.

What’s the plan for live shows? did you originally ever expect to perform live?
Whatever we do I hope people will understand that being on stage is a fucked up situation in the first place, where everything can happen: you can live more than you’ve ever lived or be wanting to die, feeling things will never be the same again.

The newest album, jj no 3 has already leaked online. What does it feel like to have to deal with a leak?
It (jj no3) should’ve been released in September though, so it’s all good. A slightly fairer chance for anyone to keep up with us.

And what’s Sweden like?
It’s everything you want it to be.

You can read the rest of the exchange here.

The second “interview” is more of a single e-mail response to a website who has blasted their latest no.3 release. Here’s what Joakim has to say to Warmer Climes negative response to their latest effort:

I admire you being honest and straightforward, speaking from your guts, but as we both can see, there’s no future for you and me, if you say I’m useless, awful, telling me what to do with my life and my time, how to feel, how to live, we can never have a working relationship. I hope you can understand that. It’s oh so simple. We’re about life, and everything ain’t pretty, you, if anybody should know that. I’m me, what else could I be, and if you can’t handle the truth, well, then you’re bound to drown. I hope you can maintain your successful career on the internet, when it seems so important to you. And one should do what feels important in ones heart. Like writing emails. Talking about albums. To me it feels like you have a lot inside of you that needs to find its right way out. But on your way there I understand that this is something you think is worthwhile. I hope your persistence, passion and love will take you to places you never could imagine. And that we can someday meet as equals, not me being adored and you not being a whore. SY 4 ever.

jj // Rarity Tracks

Friday, January 29th, 2010

No doubt my love affair with the mysterious Swedish act jj is borderline obsessive. Even though the duo of Joakim Benon and vocalist Elin Kastlander seem to put out free mp3s every other week through their equally cryptic label Sincerely Yours, it never satiates my appetite for their music. Below is a collection of oddball tracks that they’ve done which have cropped up online. Some miss the mark (“Troublemaker” for example) while others I can’t believe were left off of their proper releases — but all make for pretty good listens. Enjoy!

PT Music Mixxx // Laid & Paid: Weak ‘n Mixxx

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

We’ve all had those moments waking up late on a Saturday morning after a long night of partying where the only plans for the day is laying on the couch, mindlessly surfing the net, and drifting in and out of sleep. Well my new mix Laid & Paid: Weak ‘n Mixxx is the soundtrack for these times — keeping it nice and chill so not to exacerbate the hungover headaches.

You can download the mix directly from here (EDIT: rapidshare seems to be having problems this morning, so here’s a more direct link) and after which sit back, relax, and enjoy the 75+ of smooth tunes while drinking your Bloody Marys and downing your Ibuprofen. There’s a good blend of foreign/domestic, popular/obscure, full-band/instrumentals, so you’re sure to be able to pick up a couple of new favorites while revisiting some classic songs you might not have heard in a while. Here’s the tracklist:

Jóvenes y Sexys // El Reloj
Mountain Man // Animal Tracks
jj // Let Go
Jens Lekman // Jag Tyckte Hon Sa Lönnlöv
Broken Bells // The High Road
Acid House Kings // The Heart Is a Stone
Cryin’ Sam Collins // Lonesome Road
Sara Lov // My Body Is a Cage (Arcade Fire Cover)
El Perro del Mar // From the Valley to the Stars
The Wave Pictures // Just Like a Drummer
Woods // The Dark
Beach House // Gila
Chromatic Flights // I Am a Rock (Simon & Garfunkel Cover)
Man Man // Doo Right
Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba // Bambugu Blues
The Knife // Vegetarian Restaurant
A Studio // Self Service (Short Version)
Run DMT // St. James
Cass McCombs // Don’t Vote
Moonface // Marimba and Shit-Drums (Excerpt)
Ducktails // On the Boardwalk
jj // My Way

If you like the mix, check out the Pre-Party one I did a month ago.

jj // My Way | Let Go

Friday, January 15th, 2010

The cryptic Swedish label Sincerely Yours seems to be in a giving mood lately, offering up first a video featuring a jj-assisted Avner single called “Bed för mig”, then releasing jj’s n° 2.1 which features a handful of previously unreleased tracks, now they just made available two new tracks for free download that jj made on his trip in ‘08 to Malaga: “My Way” and “Let Go”.

Both are great tracks that certainly don’t feel like they should have been left on the cutting floor from the n° 2 sessions (UPDATE: “Let Go” is off their upcoming Secretly Canadian n° 3 release). “My Way” features a lengthy Lil’ Wayne interlude (courtesy of his verse off of Trina’s “Don’t Trip”) over jj’s vaporized atmospheric instrumentals. “Let Go”, on the other hand, uses no heavy-duty sampling as a crutch — serving up heavenly harp plucks to compliment their always airy vocals. Like anything jj does, there are overt drug references (“take me away like I overdosed on heroin”), however most of the track’s subject matter deals more with the need to take chances.

If you want to see the whole post, check it from Sincerely Your’s site here, or if you just want to download the tracks:

PT Music Mixxx // Chillaxxx Mixx²

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

So a couple of years ago, my buddy DP made this killer dance mix which went by the appropriate title “DP’s Sex Mix” — yeah, it was that smooth. Although that mix would guarantee to get the party hoppin’, you had to unleash it at just the right time for maximum effect (too early and you run out of material when the party hits full stride, too late and people are worn out before the mix finishes). To solve the problem of premature play, my first mix (no doubt in a series), tackles the pre-party environment — you know, when guests are starting to arrive and you want music geared towards conversation rather than rump-shaking.

You can download the mix, fully entitled “Chillaxxx Mixxx²: da Houf Pre-Sexxx Mixxx” (multiple xxx for emphasis) right here. No doubt there are some weak transitions and I need to crop/fade some endings to songs, but I think every track works as good background music for a get-together of any size. Who knows, the music itself might start up some conversations of its own. Here’s the tracklisting:

1: Warm Heart of Africa // The Very Best (ft. Ezra Koenig)
2: Ecstasy // jj
3: Get ‘Em High // Kanye West (ft. Common) [A-Trak Remix]
4: POP // M.I.A. & Diplo
5: Little Dreamer // Future Islands (ft. Victoria Legrand) [Jones Remix]
6: Norway // Beach House
7: Animals Collecting Money // Animal Collective x Paper Route Gangstaz [Hood Internet Remix]
8: Idioteque // Calico Horse (Radiohead Cover)
9: Tower Grove Joint // Phaseone
10: A New Chance // The Tough Alliance (Tanlines Remix)
11: Imitosis // Andrew Bird (Four Tet Remix)
12: The xx Chicago Girls // Jams Dean
13: Never Content // Air France (Friends Tropic Thunder Edit)
14: One // Yeasayer
15: El Reloj // Jóvenes y Sexys
16: Dangers Not a Stranger // Gucci Mane (Diplo Remix)
17: Freeway // Kurt Vile
18: YGTL // Florence + The Machine (The xx Remix)
