Dominant Legs // Just Silly Ones

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

“Relatively new” video for Girls guitarist Ryan Lynch’s side-project Dominant Legs. It’s been a while since I heard a peep from the group, however, from the looks of things, they are slated to have a pretty busy August. The absence of “Just Silly Ones” from their upcoming Young at Love and Life EP tells me that this Lefse-released record is going to be really, really good.

I don’t care what Punxsutawney Phil says, it’s freaking springtime in Portland RIGHT NOW! To celebrate the handful of sunny days we’ve had this past month (my standard for declaring a season change is pretty damn low), I put this mix together while boxing up my SAD lamp and dusting off my sunglasses. Ah spring: summer’s warm-up act.

You can download the hour-long mix here (92.5Mb). As for the tracklist, it’s mostly new(er) stuff with some sprinklings of old favorites here and there:

  • RxRy // Baulkn Slihts
  • Ducktails // Oh, Magnolia Tree
  • Sonny and The Sunsets // Too Young to Burn
  • King Tuff // Sun Medallion
  • Memoryhouse // Foreground (Grizzly Bear Cover)
  • Cibelle // Lightworks
  • Javelin // Mossy Woodland
  • El Rego et ses Commandose // E Nan Mian Nuku
  • Dominant Legs // Clawing Out at the Walls
  • Efterklang // Modern Drift
  • The Sandwitches // Grey Wizard
  • Julian Lynch // Banana Jam Pt. 1
  • Primary 1 // Foaming (Memory Tapes Remix)
  • El Guicho // Prez Lagarto
  • Tamaryn // Light Shadows

Also, if you like this mix, you might also enjoy some of the other ones I put together in the past.

Dominant Legs // “Clawing Out At the Walls”

Guess I missed the boat on last week’s announcement by Lefse Records, but it seems that Girls guitarist Ryan Lynch’s new project Dominant Legs can finally update their myspace page and remove the word “unsigned”. Home to critic darlings Neon Indian and The Delta Mirror as well as starting up the sister label Waaga Records earlier this year, Lefse is certainly gaining territory fast — and with the Dominant Legs signing it looks like they are gearing up for a label-of-the-year run for ‘10.

Posting a series of demos this past October, the one that caught my eye most is the track “Clawing Out At the Walls”. With quivering vocals provided by Lynch over a repetitive tropical-tinged guitar line and laid-back bongo drumming, the song almost makes you forget it’s the dead of winter outside and it’s freaking cold in your apartment. Almost… Although the good time feel is present with the track, I wouldn’t consider it in the same “beach realm” as acts like Real Estate as Lynch’s choice of chords and harmonies have a more dusky — more mysterious — tone to it.

You can check out the track below and, if you’re interested, mosey on over to their myspace page to dive head first into some other demos:
