The good folks over at Bathetic Records decided to usher in the new year in style by releasing a killer 14-track compilation. Here’s what co-creator Alex Zhang Hungtai had to say about it:

I’d like to take this opportunity to say that we are truly grateful and thank you all for your support this past year. Let this compilation be a signifier of more fucking bad ass music thats to come in 2012 from our crew and family. We hope you enjoy this FREE compilation as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Work hard, play hard, get paid, fund new project, write, record, repeat until you succeed. Cumulate and cumulate and cumulate.

Angel Olsen // Strange Cacti

It might seem a bit premature to choose a favorite cassette since my love affair with tapes is barely in its infancy, but after listening to Angel Olsen’s release on Bathetic Records about a half-dozen times of the span of thirty-six hours I could care less what other people think: it’s just that damn good!

I didn’t know much about Olsen until Lou over at Salad Fork posted about her four months back and completely forgot about loving her until I was recently surfing Bathetic Records’ website. Thankfully, I was able to land a copy of her “repress” before it was pronounced Dead. For those who weren’t able to score a copy of the tape, below is a an mp3 and video teaser of Olsen’s beautiful, yet darkly powerful, singing/songwriting ability (much in the same vein as Marissa Nadler). Also, she has another release on Love Lion that may or may not be available, so check it out.
