<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/tag/grimes/">I love Grimes</a>. I love her original music, I love all the remixes that she puts together, and I love her songs getting remixed by others. The latest is a warped out version (<a href="http://warp.net/records/babe-rainbow" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/warp.net/records/babe-rainbow?referer=');">pun intended</a>) of &#8220;Crystal Ball&#8221; by fellow Canadian <a href="http://baberainbow.com/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/baberainbow.com/?referer=');">Babe Rainbow</a>.</p>
<p>Babe Rainbow completely strips down the Bat for Lashes-feel of the original and reassembles it in a bed of minimalist drum plops and synth chords. Looping Grime&#8217;s signature &#8220;AaaaAaah&#8221;s and producing rhythm from a repetition of &#8220;Fasssster&#8221;s give the track a more hypnotic feel than even the original can claim, which is quite the feat. Check out both versions below:</p>

<p>I&#8217;m always uneasy when new genre names are coined (re: chillwave), however, the term &#8220;witch house&#8221; to describe the molasses-moving, symbol-drenched signees to the all-too-appropriately-named <a href="http://tri-anglerecords.com/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/tri-anglerecords.com/?referer=');">Tri Angle Records</a> is incredibly apropos. When I first heard that a collection of these slow-mo, &#8220;drag&#8221; artists were set to unveil a six-track mixtape paying tribute to the fallen starlet Lindsay Lohan, ironically entitled <em>Let Me Shine For You</em>, I was more than surprised. I was dumbfounded.</p>
<p>Maybe it&#8217;s the bizarreness of the project coupled with the adventurous nature of &#8220;witch house&#8221; music, but somehow this mixtape works incredibly well. Bookended by the dischordant, haunting efforts of <a href="http://warp.net/records/babe-rainbow" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/warp.net/records/babe-rainbow?referer=');">Babe Rainbow</a> and <a href="http://www.pointnever.com/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.pointnever.com/?referer=');">Oneohtrix Point Never</a>, <em>Let Me Shine For You</em> is filled with 22 minutes of Lohan tracks raised and reassembled in the most unlikely of ways. No doubt, the highlight for me is <a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/?s=stalker">PT-Music favorite Stalker&#8217;s</a> dismantling of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sA_f_kd__Q" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sA_f_kd_Q&amp;referer=');">&#8220;Disconnected&#8221;</a>, creating a post-apocalyptic theme song that is <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/25/books/25masl.html" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.nytimes.com/2006/09/25/books/25masl.html?referer=');"><em>Road</em></a>-ready.</p>
<p>In a completely unrelated move, NY artist <a href="http://www.myspace.com/blissedoutnyc" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.myspace.com/blissedoutnyc?referer=');">Blissed Out</a> created a &#8220;Lindsay Lohan Fuck U Edit&#8221; to <a href="http://www.myspace.com/pinkpriest" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.myspace.com/pinkpriest?referer=');">Pink Priest&#8217;s</a> track &#8220;Sleep Ranger&#8221;. I think he gives this shadowy reworking the best description possible:</p>
<blockquote><p>the +lindsay lohan fuck u edit+ is a combination of those sounds and the thoughts of the darkness of success. it was recorded to be heard in suvs across the galaxy, with the bass all the way turnt up, while girls dressed entirely in the black summon spirits with a ouiji board. </p></blockquote>
<p>You can check out both the Stalker remix as well as the Blissed Out track below. If you want to download <em>Let Me Shine For You</em> in its entirely, <a href="http://dismagazine.com/disco/6173/tri-angle-records-presents-let-me-shine-for-you/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/dismagazine.com/disco/6173/tri-angle-records-presents-let-me-shine-for-you/?referer=');">head here to do it</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1007/05 Disconnection (Disconnected).mp3">Stalker // Disconnection (Disconnected)</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.parttimemusic.com/audio/1007/Sleep Ranger +Lindsay Lohan Fuck U E.mp3">Pink Priest // Sleep Ranger (+Blissed Out&#8217;s Lindsay Lohan Fuck U Edit+)</a></p>

<p>It takes a good DJ to whip up a remix that catches your attention, but it takes a <em>great</em> one to do it consistently. Take Vancouver-based <a href="http://www.myspace.com/bbrnbw" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.myspace.com/bbrnbw?referer=');">Babe Rainbows</a> (aka &#8220;Cameron Reed and his laptop&#8221;) for example. I remember hearing his name a lot this past summer when his murky suboceanic &#8220;Surf-Step Edit&#8221; of Wavves&#8217; &#8220;Weed Demon&#8221; hit the blogs. I liked the track so much I put it on about half my mixes I whipped up last year. </p>
<p>Well Reed just put out a<a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/mp3/mf_doom__gazzillion_ear_babe_rainbow_remix_stereogum_112591.html" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/stereogum.com/archives/mp3/mf_doom_gazzillion_ear_babe_rainbow_remix_stereogum_112591.html?referer=');"> Stereogum-approved</a> revamp of DOOM&#8217;s &#8220;Gazzillon Ear&#8221; which just might be some of his best work to date. With the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0lUI6NQynA" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0lUI6NQynA&amp;referer=');">number of remixes</a> approaching <a href="http://hypem.com/search/a%20milli%20remix/1/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/hypem.com/search/a_20milli_20remix/1/?referer=');">&#8220;A Milli&#8221; territory</a>, Babe Rainbow is able to rise above all the rift-raft by stripping the track down to just DOOM&#8217;s bone-chilling vocals and only adding a minimal amount of creepy instrumentals that are sure to make even Fever Ray squirm.</p>
<p>A recent <a href="http://warp.net/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/warp.net/?referer=');">Warp Records</a> signee, Reed has his debut EP release, entitled <em>Shaved</em>, in less than a weeks time. If you have to get your Babe Rainbow fix now, check out <a href="http://baberainbow.tumblr.com/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/baberainbow.tumblr.com/?referer=');">his blog for some free tracks</a> as well as ordering the <a href="http://acephalerecords.com/releases/ace006--midnight-juggernauts--new-technology/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/acephalerecords.com/releases/ace006--midnight-juggernauts--new-technology/?referer=');">Midnight Juggernauts 7&#8221; off of Acephale Records</a> which features a B-side mix by him. To whet your appetite, here are Wavves and DOOM tracks:</p>
