How to Dress Well // Here, In Heaven (Elite Gymnastics Cover)

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

For those who’ve read my site for a while, it comes as no surprise that I love Acephale Records. I give them full credit for turning me on to everything Korallreven that I don’t even know where to begin to thank them.

Well their latest post-Korallreven release is an LP by Minneapolis duo Elite Gymnastics. Occupying the rare unclassifiable space between genres (or maybe the inner crossings of some higher order Venn diagram of genres), Elite Gymnastics’ tracks are better explained audibly rather than text-ually. Below, check out a track from the A-side, “Omamori,” as well as a cover of “Here, In Heaven” by PT-Music favorite How to Dress Well that’s part of a future remix record — also courtesy of Acephale — and be sure to cop the record(s) here.

Korallreven // The Truest Faith

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

I’ve been sitting on the Swedish group Korallreven for a while and a Ghostape remix of their splendid track “The Truest Faith” was enough to jolt me out of my slumber and finally post about them. Composed of the duo Daniel Tjäder and Marcus Joons (the former is also of Radio Dept. fame), Korallreven is just another drop in the already overflowing cup of blissfully sweet pop music that the Scandinavian country is known for. For the remix, Ghostape does what he does best: loop the song’s harmonious elements and cake over it with sonorous tribal percussion.

You can check out the video for the original track as well as an mp3 for the remix (via: GvB). Also included is the B-side to their recently released Acephale 7” which, from both an aesthetic and sonic perspective, is a must-have record.

Babe Rainbow // Remixes

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

It takes a good DJ to whip up a remix that catches your attention, but it takes a great one to do it consistently. Take Vancouver-based Babe Rainbows (aka “Cameron Reed and his laptop”) for example. I remember hearing his name a lot this past summer when his murky suboceanic “Surf-Step Edit” of Wavves’ “Weed Demon” hit the blogs. I liked the track so much I put it on about half my mixes I whipped up last year.

Well Reed just put out a Stereogum-approved revamp of DOOM’s “Gazzillon Ear” which just might be some of his best work to date. With the number of remixes approaching “A Milli” territory, Babe Rainbow is able to rise above all the rift-raft by stripping the track down to just DOOM’s bone-chilling vocals and only adding a minimal amount of creepy instrumentals that are sure to make even Fever Ray squirm.

A recent Warp Records signee, Reed has his debut EP release, entitled Shaved, in less than a weeks time. If you have to get your Babe Rainbow fix now, check out his blog for some free tracks as well as ordering the Midnight Juggernauts 7” off of Acephale Records which features a B-side mix by him. To whet your appetite, here are Wavves and DOOM tracks:
