ceo // White Magic [details]

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

More details have slowly emerged about Eric Berglund’s (aka ceo) solo album as another hyperlinked star has cropped up on the group’s cryptic website. In similar form to The Tough Alliance’s 2007 LP A New Chance, Berglund’s other possibly defunct group, White Magic is slated to also be an eight-track album with amazing cover art (pictured above). The complete track listing is:

  • All Around
  • Illuminata
  • Love and Do What You Will
  • White Magic
  • Oh God Oh Dead
  • No Mercy
  • Come With Me
  • ***

And for those who missed my previous post, here is a short video preview, appropriately titled “Prologue”, to get you excited about for the June 29th USA release date:

Represses // Real Estate, Pearl Harbor, Kurt Vile

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Got some good news to share with fans of the high-cost, high-quality Mexican Summer imprint. As reported on Salad Fork yesterday, the label has decided to repress a handful of some of their long sold-out vinyls including Real Estate’s Reality EP, half of which will be on splattered wax (seen above), Pearl Harbor’s Something About the Chaparrals EP on turquoise vinyl, and Kurt Vile’s 5-year-in-the-making God Is Saying This to You… LP. The supplies aren’t especially limited (2k for the first two; no info on the KV quantity but I’d imagine it’s the same), but nevertheless, the aesthetics alone make me want to shell out the $15-$20 for another copy. So head on over to their store if you weren’t one of the few early adopters to snag a copy.

Mountain Man Fest

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Shane & Gabe have a dream. A dream to host the raddest festival that ever existed.

That’s the intro to one of the latest kickstarter music projects that caught my eye. I got to hand it to these two dudes, they certainly know how to dream big! Coordinating with the folks at Underwater Peoples Records, Shane and Gabe have decided to crank their music love affair to 11 and are trying to put on a very impressive one-day, listener-funded festival in upstate New York.

No doubt the largest obstacle this festival needs to overcome is the $65,000 that must be raised in a one month time frame — an amount that, according to a back-of-an-envelope calculation, equates to sixty-two $35 tickets sold daily — however, the coordinators seem undaunted by the challenge. Smartly, the group has already launched a kickstarter page to help generate funds, resulting in a type of transparency you don’t usually get with events of this magnitude. Not only can you track in real-time how many attendees the festival will have (something a data nerd like myself loves), but you also get a rough break-down of the expenditures: sound & lights = $4000, venue rental = $3000, and, impressively, $48750 = band fees, just to name a few.

So far the line-up includes:

Unfortunately, the most notable absentee (and Underwater Peoples alum) is the festival’s namesake: Mountain Man. But with line-up additions occurring somewhat regularly, there is a chance this might be remedied.

So if you know you’ll be in New York or a surrounding state on Saturday, July 24, do yourself a favor and reserve your ticket now and check out the most kickass festival Saratoga Springs, NY has ever seen!

Best Coast // Sun Was High (So Was I) 7”

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Sorry for sounding too much like a shill for LA noise-rock act Best Coast, but Ms. Bethany Cosentino & Co. have been one of my favorite new bands of the past year so I feel all of my recent posts have been justifiable.

If you’re like me and you just missed copping their Sun Was High (So Was I) 7” on the unfortunately named Art Fag Recordings, have no fear because a repressing has just been announced! Printed on orange vinyl this go around, this limited edition 7” is sure to be snatched up quickly by the hordes of recently converted fans. So if you want a copy, head over to one of the fine online vendors to snag one before it’s too late again! Below, is an mp3 of one of the B-side tracks (and one of my favorite BC songs), “That’s The Way Boys Are”:

Upcoming Release // Amnesty Intl. Compilation

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Whoa! I caught wind of a massive compilation benefiting Amnesty International through a blog posting by Massachusetts singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler (whose contributing an original song). Don’t know why I haven’t heard much about this project yet from other places as there is a HUGE line-up on this 150+ song compilation put on by the folks at Buffetlibre. Pulling in over fifty musicians and bands from pretty much all across the globe, this is certainly a worldwide effort — something only Amnesty Intl. could put together. Here’s the promo video:

The album is available for digital download March 1 at the ridiculous minimum price of 2 Euros, but you’re welcome to donate more as all proceeds from the sale of the compilation will go to Amnesty International’s humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict. If you want a full list of all the contributors you can check it out here. These are some of my personal favorites:

  • Dan Deacon (US)
  • Marissa Nadler (US)
  • Voxtrot (US)
  • The Antlers (US)
  • Asobi Seksu (US)
  • Dent May (US)
  • Sic Alps (US)
  • Thao and The Get Down Stay Down (US)
  • Bonde do Role (Brazil)
  • Patrick Wolf (UK)
  • Malick Pathe Sow (Senegal)
  • Malajube (Canada)
  • The Hidden Cameras (Canada)
  • Fennesz (Austria)
  • Ane Brun (Norway)
  • Vieux Farka Toure (Mali)
  • Sally Shapiro (Sweden)
  • Air France (Sweden)
  • Mexican Institute of Sound (Mexico)

You can stream a handful of tracks and download Isreali Ivri Lider’s track “Mike” from the official site. I can’t wait for this!

iamamiwhoami // “Prelude…”

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

For those keeping count, this is video #3 that the mysterious iamamiwhoami has released in the past month or so. My take on who it is — no idea, but I like the mystery…

[UPDATE]: Chris from Gorilla vs. Bear informed me via e-mail that this “new” video is in fact a re-release of the first one made back in Decemeber with the “goat birthing scene” taken out due to a copyright infringement issue. I never caught the first video when it came out, so sorry for the re-post.

The Beatles // Apple Records USB

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

My friend Jerod sent me over a couple of photos of the ultra-limited (well, at only 30K available it is by Beatles standards) Apple Records USB drive containing high quality audio recordings, exclusive videos, and a shit ton of photos. At a retail price tag of $280, this is certainly not for the casual fan, but anyone who can shell out the cash for the recently remastered mono/stereo box sets have to be at least thinking about adding this to the collection. Here’s what Jerod had to say about it:

It’s pretty awesome! The apple is really heavy, I think it’s solid metal. The packaging is kinda like an iPod or iPhone — really minimal and clean. I watched all the mini documentaries last night and they are amazing. They have lots of audio from the studio, like from when they would be rolling tape before and after the takes, or the beginning of bad takes.

The audio quality is really good. I’ve only been listening to the FLAC files, all of which are 7.32GB. The mp3s are 1.39GB but are a good 320kbs bit rate (those are better for iPods and the like since iTunes can’t import FLAC files). The drive has an autorun flash interface which allows access to all the music in a cover-flow-esque user interface. It also has the 13 videos, and a bunch of photos including alternate photos from album covers.

Over all, I’ve only been more and more happy with the purchase as time has gone by. I got my hands on it just last night, but I’ve already listened to three of the albums, watched all the videos, and looked at a good chunk of the photos! Some people have scoffed at me when I tell them the price, but I think it is really well priced. Plus, because there are only 30,000, it might very well be worth a lot more in the future, maybe even the near future.

So there you have it! If you want to take the plunge, there are several outlets selling it. If not, here are some more shots Jerod took of the packaging as well as the drive itself so you can almost experience the feeling of unwrapping this gem:

Jay Reatard // Cover Songs

Friday, January 15th, 2010

In a sort of post-mortem celebration of Memphis garage rocker Jay Reatard’s prolific career, two cover songs have been circulating around the blogosphere this week. The first, a morbidly appropriate take on Nirvana’s “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle”, was released on his website after the tragedy and is possibly his last recording he ever made. The second track, a cover of Beck’s “Gamma Ray”, was done a while back but Beck reposted it on his site after hearing news about Reatard’s death.

jj // My Way | Let Go

Friday, January 15th, 2010

The cryptic Swedish label Sincerely Yours seems to be in a giving mood lately, offering up first a video featuring a jj-assisted Avner single called “Bed för mig”, then releasing jj’s n° 2.1 which features a handful of previously unreleased tracks, now they just made available two new tracks for free download that jj made on his trip in ‘08 to Malaga: “My Way” and “Let Go”.

Both are great tracks that certainly don’t feel like they should have been left on the cutting floor from the n° 2 sessions (UPDATE: “Let Go” is off their upcoming Secretly Canadian n° 3 release). “My Way” features a lengthy Lil’ Wayne interlude (courtesy of his verse off of Trina’s “Don’t Trip”) over jj’s vaporized atmospheric instrumentals. “Let Go”, on the other hand, uses no heavy-duty sampling as a crutch — serving up heavenly harp plucks to compliment their always airy vocals. Like anything jj does, there are overt drug references (“take me away like I overdosed on heroin”), however most of the track’s subject matter deals more with the need to take chances.

If you want to see the whole post, check it from Sincerely Your’s site here, or if you just want to download the tracks:
