Bathetic Records // Mixtape

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

The good folks over at Bathetic Records decided to usher in the new year in style by releasing a killer 14-track compilation. Here’s what co-creator Alex Zhang Hungtai had to say about it:

I’d like to take this opportunity to say that we are truly grateful and thank you all for your support this past year. Let this compilation be a signifier of more fucking bad ass music thats to come in 2012 from our crew and family. We hope you enjoy this FREE compilation as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Work hard, play hard, get paid, fund new project, write, record, repeat until you succeed. Cumulate and cumulate and cumulate.

Couldn’t say it any better… Below are two of my favorites from the comp, and you can download the whole thing for free from Bathetic’s site:

As those who live on the East Coast or the Rocky Mountains can attest to, winter is here (above was taken from my front door this past weekend in Salt Lake City). Since it’s been a while since I put together a mix, I thought what better way to celebrate these sub-freezing temps than a playlist that’s CD-R burn-ready (playtime = 1 hr 6 min). Check out the tracklist below:

  • Moss of Aura // Roicka 1
  • Elite Gymnastics // here, in heaven 2
  • Part Time // Night Drive
  • Jesse Ruins // Sofija
  • Puro Instinct // Slivers of You (Live on Daytrotter)
  • Rangers // Conversations on the Jet Stream
  • Sun Glitters // Too Much to Lose (Slow Magic Remix)
  • Keep Shelly in Athens // Fokionos Negri Street
  • Gang Gang Dance // ∞ ∞

Tom Cruz // Songs Inspired by Jerry Maguire

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Ever since discovering the Mixes tab on Altered Zones this past week, I’ve been listening non-stop to music that musicians seem to be digging. Count it as fortuitous that I remembered a Tom Cruz/Wreck Tech concoction based on, appropriately, the Tom Cruise classic film Jerry Maguire that plopped in my inbox a couple of weeks back. Wreck Tech does a great job seamlessly splicing together tracks of Cruz’s picking, putting together one hell of banger mix.

You can stream it / download it below (via soundcloud) as well as check out a video of Tom Cruz talking about the project:

PT Music Mixxx // New Beginnings

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

For those who follow me on twitter, you are probably already aware that I’ve relocated from Portland to Utah this past month. To commemorate this move to a new environment, I’ve made a one-hour mix composed of mainly new groups from the past year-or-so (with the most notable exceptions being DOOM and Big K.R.I.T. — those songs were just too tight to leave out). All these artists have, at some point in time, been on constant repeat while I’ve packed/moved/unpacked my stuff from point A to B this past month. Much love to Delicious Scopitone, YVYNYL, Get Off the Coast, Salad Fork, Beko-DSL, Widows/Watch, and of course all the stellar bands who’ve submitted mp3s to me which have shown up on this mix. Track list and download link is below. Hope you dig “New Beginnings”!

Jens Lekman // A Summer in 3/4 Time

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Ushering in a return from a recent hiatus from his website, quirky Swedish songwriter Jens Lekman dropped this killer summertime mix where the common thread between samples is, as expected, their waltz-y time signature. Always known to have an eclectic taste in music, Mr. Lekman provides a fluid 28+ minute mix chock-full of obscure tracks and movie snippets (with some better known songs sprinkled in here and there) that are arranged so brilliantly that you can’t help but think to yourself: “Bravo, Jens! Bravo!”

You can check out the samples Jens used as well as a download for the entire mix below. Also, head over to his site to read more about the origins of this project.

  • Au Revoir Simone // Shadows (Jens Lekman’s remix)
  • Barbara Mason // Oh How It Hurts
  • Thomas Mapfumo // Madiro
  • The Morning Benders // Excuses
  • Dialogue from Gregory’s Girl (1981)
  • Chad & Jeremy // Everyone’s Gone To The Moon

Stalker // 48 Mix (Zone III Edits)

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

A couple of weeks back, Chicago slo-mo beat-machine Stalker unveiled a new mutilated mix on Pinglewood which, even after a handful of listens, I can’t fully wrap my head around. It’s just about as nuts of a 25 minute listen you could find anywhere, with several (OK, almost all) tracks sounding like nothing you have ever heard in your life.

You can check out the track list as well as snatch the mp3 below, or if you just want an intro, head on over to Stalker’s website to listen to “Scrape”, arguably the most interesting cut in the mix. For those like me who are anxious for a physical release, Stalker is currently concocting something special for Tri Angle Records that’s scheduled for later this year.

Stalker- I Drown
Stalker – Untitled
Stalker – Rryyddee
Hype Williams – The Throning
Grillgrill – ..Sl0WlicKin…
Stalker – Untitled 2
Stalker – Scrape
Ginuwine – In Those Jeans (Stalker Cut)
Ryuichi Sakamoto – Last Regrets
Fleetwood Mac – Prove Your Love
Stalker – Oxy

PT Music Mixxx // Groovvve Bloom

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

I don’t care what Punxsutawney Phil says, it’s freaking springtime in Portland RIGHT NOW! To celebrate the handful of sunny days we’ve had this past month (my standard for declaring a season change is pretty damn low), I put this mix together while boxing up my SAD lamp and dusting off my sunglasses. Ah spring: summer’s warm-up act.

You can download the hour-long mix here (92.5Mb). As for the tracklist, it’s mostly new(er) stuff with some sprinklings of old favorites here and there:

  • Ducktails // Oh, Magnolia Tree
  • Sonny and The Sunsets // Too Young to Burn
  • King Tuff // Sun Medallion
  • Memoryhouse // Foreground (Grizzly Bear Cover)

  • The Sandwitches // Grey Wizard
  • Julian Lynch // Banana Jam Pt. 1
  • Primary 1 // Foaming (Memory Tapes Remix)
  • El Guicho // Prez Lagarto
  • Tamaryn // Light Shadows

Also, if you like this mix, you might also enjoy some of the other ones I put together in the past.

PT Music Mixxx // Laid & Paid: Weak ‘n Mixxx

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

We’ve all had those moments waking up late on a Saturday morning after a long night of partying where the only plans for the day is laying on the couch, mindlessly surfing the net, and drifting in and out of sleep. Well my new mix Laid & Paid: Weak ‘n Mixxx is the soundtrack for these times — keeping it nice and chill so not to exacerbate the hungover headaches.

You can download the mix directly from here (EDIT: rapidshare seems to be having problems this morning, so here’s a more direct link) and after which sit back, relax, and enjoy the 75+ of smooth tunes while drinking your Bloody Marys and downing your Ibuprofen. There’s a good blend of foreign/domestic, popular/obscure, full-band/instrumentals, so you’re sure to be able to pick up a couple of new favorites while revisiting some classic songs you might not have heard in a while. Here’s the tracklist:

Jóvenes y Sexys // El Reloj
Mountain Man // Animal Tracks
jj // Let Go
Jens Lekman // Jag Tyckte Hon Sa Lönnlöv
Broken Bells // The High Road
Acid House Kings // The Heart Is a Stone
Cryin’ Sam Collins // Lonesome Road
Sara Lov // My Body Is a Cage (Arcade Fire Cover)
El Perro del Mar // From the Valley to the Stars
The Wave Pictures // Just Like a Drummer

Beach House // Gila
Chromatic Flights // I Am a Rock (Simon & Garfunkel Cover)
Man Man // Doo Right
Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba // Bambugu Blues

If you like the mix, check out the Pre-Party one I did a month ago.

Grooveshark // Streamable Playlists

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Since Muxtape went defunct last year only to be resurrected in a much more limited capacity, I haven’t been able to find an adequate platform to make streamable playlists (I’ve dabbled a little with some, but to not much success). That is, until now! To better beef-up my analysis of Reddit’s Top Albums of 2009, many people suggested creating a playlist of each band’s hit songs using a website called Grooveshark. Thank god for redditors, because this turned out to be one of the biggest discoveries of the year!

The premise is simple: you search for the song you want to add into your playlist, drag-and-drop it into a folder, and then share the URL of your mix with others! If you can’t find that song you’re looking for on their site, you can add to their massive library by uploading the track (if you happen to have a copy of the audio file). Yep, it’s THAT easy — and did I mention it’s all free?

To show an example, here are ten of my favorite songs which came out of 2009 that I whipped up in less than five minutes on grooveshark:

PT Music Mixxx // Chillaxxx Mixx²

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

So a couple of years ago, my buddy DP made this killer dance mix which went by the appropriate title “DP’s Sex Mix” — yeah, it was that smooth. Although that mix would guarantee to get the party hoppin’, you had to unleash it at just the right time for maximum effect (too early and you run out of material when the party hits full stride, too late and people are worn out before the mix finishes). To solve the problem of premature play, my first mix (no doubt in a series), tackles the pre-party environment — you know, when guests are starting to arrive and you want music geared towards conversation rather than rump-shaking.

You can download the mix, fully entitled “Chillaxxx Mixxx²: da Houf Pre-Sexxx Mixxx” (multiple xxx for emphasis) right here. No doubt there are some weak transitions and I need to crop/fade some endings to songs, but I think every track works as good background music for a get-together of any size. Who knows, the music itself might start up some conversations of its own. Here’s the tracklisting:

1: Warm Heart of Africa // The Very Best (ft. Ezra Koenig)
2: Ecstasy // jj
3: Get ‘Em High // Kanye West (ft. Common) [A-Trak Remix]
4: POP // M.I.A. & Diplo
5: Little Dreamer // Future Islands (ft. Victoria Legrand) [Jones Remix]
6: Norway // Beach House
7: Animals Collecting Money // Animal Collective x Paper Route Gangstaz [Hood Internet Remix]
8: Idioteque // Calico Horse (Radiohead Cover)
9: Tower Grove Joint // Phaseone
10: A New Chance // The Tough Alliance (Tanlines Remix)
11: Imitosis // Andrew Bird (Four Tet Remix)
12: The xx Chicago Girls // Jams Dean
13: Never Content // Air France (Friends Tropic Thunder Edit)
14: One // Yeasayer
15: El Reloj // Jóvenes y Sexys
16: Dangers Not a Stranger // Gucci Mane (Diplo Remix)
17: Freeway // Kurt Vile
18: YGTL // Florence + The Machine (The xx Remix)
